10 Things To Do Before Calling The Computer Repair Man

No one likes to get their computer fixed. It’s a big headache carting that heavy thing into a repair shop and waiting days or even weeks to get it back. It’s an overall painful experience, so I’ve done what I can and compiled this little list of things everyone should do before calling in the techs just to make the whole ordeal as painless as it can possibly be.

1.Restart your computer.
You may think this is a little silly, but there are a lot of people out there who never EVER turn off their computers. I know because my dear mother is one of them. It just doesn’t occur to them. You wouldn’t leave your car on overnight idling would you? So why do the same to your computer? Many times problems can go away simply by restarting your computer so the system can un-gum all its pathways and start fresh.

2.Make sure your computer is on.
This might seem like a joke, but I’ve known enough tech support personnel to learn that it isn’t, often monitors can get unplugged randomly so it’s always a good idea to make sure everything is connected.

3.Make sure EVERYTHING is connected.
Your computer has wires. Lots of wires. Power wires, internet cables, USB plugs, mouse and keyboard connections… and quite often more. It’s so easy to nudge something and a connection to come loose. Make sure everything is where it should be and in the right plug, and you’ll avoid lots of headaches. My other articles will go into a little more depth on what to do for more specific problems.

4.Check for manufacturer’s warranty because repairs are often covered.
Especially if you’ve bought your computer within the last 6 months to a year, repair will be covered on your warranty for unexpected glitches. Then it’s just a matter of putting it into a box and letting FedEx take care of the rest, because good manufacturers will take care of all those costs too.

5.Backup your data if you can.
These days more and more people are storing very sensitive information on their computers. Even at a repair shop, things can go wrong and your information can be lost. It is an EXTREMELY good idea to backup your important files whether by burning them to CD or DVD, or transferring them to an external memory drive. External Hard Drives are excellent for this, and they’re getting cheaper all the time. They plug into a USB port, and you can store all your information on these so if your computer goes out you won’t have to worry about anything going wrong and losing your information.

6.Delete anything you wouldn’t want someone else to see
This is similar to point number 6. Don’t blindly trust strangers with your information. If you have anything on your computer that anyone could use against you, make sure it isn’t there when you take it in by backing it up somewhere else and deleting it from your computer until it’s fixed.

7.Organize any system info you have, papers ect.
When you first buy your computer it comes with a lot of things. Warranty papers, system info, driver CD’s, stickers with model numbers ect. If you can have all of this stuff handy when you take it to your repair guy, it will make your life, and his, a LOT easier, and the time he doesn’t spend figuring out that information without the papers, is money that’s not coming out of your pocket.

8.Check this website!
There are lots of useful tidbits in the articles on www.fasteasycomputerrepair.com, and more are being added as they’re thought of. If it can solve even a tiny problem for you, then your life is that much easier and I can be content with the knowledge that I’ve made someone’s life a little bit better.

9.If you know of anyone more tech-savvy then you, ask them about it.
Now I’m going to put an asterisk on this one. If you have a friend who knows what they’re doing, let them take a look at it and they might be able to help you. However, you should not let them take apart and do any real fiddling unless you know they really do know their stuff. As in they’ve taken courses on computer repair or are actually techs themselves. There are so many times a simple problem was made worse because a friend took a look and "fixed" the problem. It’s a balance between saving on labor and potential for more damage. Even repair shops can break computers. The difference is, the shops have to reimburse you.

10.Check around.
Not all repair shops are created equal. Do your research, otherwise you may be stuck with a shoddy hack job while paying through the nose for it. Think of them like mechanics for computers. Some of them are good and honest, and some of them will do whatever they can to get more dollars out of you. I go into more detail about this here.

Well there you have it. These 10 simple rules have saved many people I know a little money and a lot of stress, so I hope that in putting this up, they can help out that many more. (Tell your friends, they may just thank you for it.)

How to Repair Constant Windows Errors, Computer Freezing, and System Crashes Quickly and Easily

Learn how to fix your computer’s problems with a registry cleaner.

Are you tired of non-stop troubles with your computer?

The signs may include the blue screen of death (BSOD), computer freezing and crashing, along with random Windows errors.

These problems only seem to get worse over time. This means you may see more Windows errors pop-up from time to time or experience more freeze-ups and system crashes more frequently.

pc repair tools
A long term answer is what you need.

It may be that your registry is causing the issues, and fortunately, this can be fixed quite easily (just keep reading).

The Windows registry holds 1,000’s of settings. Some of these settings are meant for the use of Windows itself and some are for its applications. Over the course of time, the windows registry gets loaded down with useless or erroneous entries that are left mainly by incomplete uninstall routines, application errors and even misapplied tweaks. Issues will arise when the user tries to move files around on your hard-drive because registry entries will still point to the old location.

Is there anyway to fix this?

A registry cleaner may just do the trick. Simply put, a registry cleaner cleans your registry. Registry cleaner software removes the unnecessary registry entries so your computer runs much faster.

Importance of registry cleaners and how they work

In order to understand the importance of a registry it is imperative for you to understand how Windows works. Windows has a database which is used for storing the system information necessary for the configuration of the operating system for the different users of a computer who will log on and use the system.

Windows refers to this database often. This is called the central registry of a computer. Every time you turn on your computer, the registry grows and gets switched around.

This is why you need to run a registry cleaner. You need to keep your computer’s registry free from build-up. It is because of this significant tool that the cleaning process of the system is not a difficult task anymore. Truly anyone can clean their registry with an inexpensive registry cleaner.

If your computer is experiencing slower speeds, errors, and system crashes, you may need to clear your registry of errors. Learn more about registry repair.

Home Computer Repair Services

Past & present Computer Repair Services
The domain of computer repair service has come a long way. Remember the days when one had to lug the entire hardware system to the repair shop and then wait in line to get it back in order. Often one had to wait for a day or two to get the trouble pinpointed and then resolved. All this involved precious loss of time, money, energy and of course functionality. Today a home or business purpose user can hardly afford to lose that much time when your college project submission or daily operations depend on your computer.
You switch on your brand new computer at 10 in the evening and find that the Internet connection is not working. You pick up the phone and call your computer repair service technician who asks you to check the connections and you discover a loose chord and then everything’s fine.
Or the connection seems to be working fine but still you are unable to send or receive e-mails. The technician connects to your computer by way of remote desktop software access and checks your browser configurations. The problem is resolved by changing some of your settings and you are good to go; the entire procedure taking a few minutes without you having to step out of your house.
The Development
Computer repair service has increasingly evolved with highly qualified personnel using sophisticated technologies to provide a complete range of solutions for every known computer issue. The level of pro-active support that repair service companies provide is unmatched in any other field. With round the clock technical support by way of phone or e-mail you are never left in the lurch.
Further with on-site and online maintenance you do not have to leave the precincts of your house with service technicians coming to your doorstep if they are unable to resolve the issue by way of remote access, a rarity these days.
What to look for while selecting a repair service provider
Plans: Check if the service is offered in Pay As You Go packages or one which offers monthly or annual subscription. Select one that is suitable for your needs like if you are a home user then a Pay As You go plan could be more convenient while a small business user would be better served by an annual subscription.
Support Methodology: Verify if the support covers phone, mail, remote (online) as well as On-site options and if the services are 24/7. Also in case of annual plans if all support features are part of the package.
Compatibility: Ensure that the level of support covers the top brand names in the industry
Range of Services: A reputed computer repair service provider should be able to resolve all issues from the basic troubleshooting ones like start-up errors to the high end ones like system crashes and security enhancement. Reliable service firms also help educate their subscribers providing for self help tips and sessions so you don’t have to depend on them for any issue that could be resolved by yourself.

Cracking Passwords

Computer Repair & Cracking Passwords

These days cracking passwords is a common computer repair service call. Having a secure password is important but you also need to remember it.

I spend a lot of time cracking passwords! No, not for stealing software or information, for doing computer repair! One of the most common home or small business computer service repair calls I get is that Bob, fill in the blank here - lost his password / forgot his password / left the company and never told anyone his password, and we can’t use the computer or software.

If you have physical access, most times you can reset a password on any version of Windows XP. Some vertical applications get a little trickier but I still can usually figure out a way to get in to clear the existing password and then let the customer reset it.

And no, I’m not going to teach you how in this article, sorry. But what I can do is help you figure out a way to never forget a password without writing down. An especially bad practice that I see all the time is someone will write down the password on a post-it note and put it on the monitor. Which is a particularly ugly breach in security.

cracking messenger
But I can understand the problem. Chances are you have many passwords to remember if you use a computer at home or at work. And since many of the systems automatically force the user to change their password every 90 days, this becomes quite a challenge to remember them all.

There are some good ways to create a password so that you can’t forget it. And you can easily meet the minimum requirements of at least 8 characters with at least three being punctuation or numerals too. But the best is 15 characters (I won’t go technical on you but let’s just say that the stored password of over 14 characters are much more difficult to crack). I can’t even remember who taught me this method but I’ve been using it for years.

The first thing to remember is not to use children’s names, birthdays, or any information that someone might guess. This includes common names found in the dictionary or some other know source. The reason for this is there are many cracker programs out there that use these common sources to check against password to break them. So stay away from common words or expressions.

Even the programs that generate random characters can be beat by another program designed to emulate that type of software. The idea behind them is good and they can provide a stronger password but for most user that creates a bigger problem since who can remember W#8hY*2l-Km$!1d, let alone type it.

So what’s the secret? The easiest way I’ve found to remember a password is to associate it with a person or event that you’ll never forget. Something that even a good friend might not know but also something that you couldn’t forget even if you wanted to if you tried.

If the password is for windows or a windows program you have up to 127 characters most times. So use a phrase instead of just one word. So if you have a phrase (or song lyric) burned into your brain you could use it too. When I need a quick password when working at a client’s I normally look at the machine or something on the wall and use it for the password. One of my favorites is "I hate Compaq’s model 2780!" or use any computer name).

When I was five we moved to the corner of 85th street and pacific. Most people I know now don’t know that and I doubt it would come up in any conversation. So if I used 085TH@pacificst5 that contains something I can easily remember and also meets the high end password requirements.

Or how about the first love of my life (which dumped me in about 2 weeks)? I won’t use her real name to protect the guilty but here’s that one, 2wKJeN06.OrGan, I added organ since she was organic (I think). See how this works? I’ll bet we all have lots of things, events, people, and the date or age we experienced them to use.

One weakness any password can have is if someone slips in a keylogger program on your computer. Keyloggers record all the keystrokes that a user makes and regardless how tough you make your password, if they can see the key strokes, they’ve got you. And it’s much easier than you think to do a stealth install.

There is one way to get around this issue, use extended characters. If you hold down the alt key, then press one or more numerals you get one of those weird characters with double dots on top or a symbol. But the keylogger still shows the character, but a way around it is to use Alt 0160. This extended character is a space and hides the fact that you used the Alt method to create it. So they won’t be able to duplicate it even if they see it.

There is no perfect solution for passwords. But you can and should take some steps to insure that you take the appropriate precautions whenever you create one. Keep it over 15 characters, use numerals, punctuation, and alphabetical characters. Combine elements that are easy to remember but not common information like birth dates or children’s names. Use associations that make it easy to remember.

And never communicate your password in any documentation or emails. Don’t display them on your computer or loan them to friends or associates. Random generators can be helpful but aren’t bullet proof. Change your passwords on a regular basis just in case. Always have a master or Administrator password that can be used to go in and change user’s passwords when necessary.

I’d much rather fix hardware or software problems than crack passwords on a computer repair service call. It makes my job a little easier and can save you a lot of money.

Beware Of Low Cost Computer Repair Advertising

Beware Of Low Cost Or Flat Fee Ads For Computer Repair

We’ll fix anything for a $45 flat fee! How can this be?

It can’t! When you see these types of ads on Craigslist or anywhere else, our best advice to you is to move on and keep looking. This type of ad normally indicates that the service provider has little experience, insufficient skills, or is simply somebody who is trying to make an extra buck to supplement their existing income. Why would anyone risk losing the data on their PC such as pictures, emails, important documents, etc?

One service that this is especially true of is virus and spyware removal. It takes HOURS, to completely remove a virus. If someone tells you they can remove your virus simply by running a special software utility, you are being misled or the person simply doesn’t know what they are doing. Viruses leave behind remnants that can only be removed manually and this requires that the technician has advanced skills and knowledge of Windows and all of its components. In some cases, the best method is to re-install Windows but every case is different. No matter what your situation is, make sure that whoever you pick to work on your PC backs up all of your data prior to their attempt to remove a virus. Ask questions such as how will you back up my data? The answer should be that the person has a server or external hard drive that they use to store your backed up data. We’ve seen to many customers that have come to us after their PC has been trashed because of improper techniques by the
technician that worked on their PC.

how to fix computers
When you consider the information above, now ask yourself how someone can provide this service for a flat fee such as $45? It takes several hours alone just to wait while your data is being backed up and then to re-install windows and restore your data after the install is complete. On average it takes us at least 4 hours of labor to clean a customers PC. That breaks down to an hourly rate of a little over $10 an hour if you charge $45. Keep in mind this doesn’t include travel time if provided. Since almost all independent contractors do not have enough work to bill their services for 40 hours a week, you have to wonder why someone would do this? If they managed to bill 30 hours a week their yearly income would be a little of $15,000 a year. Now ask yourself if this person really has the background and skills that you would want them to have before working on your PC? We don’t think so and we doubt you do either.

Our advice to you is to call several different vendors and ask questions and get references before making a decision. Be very leery of employing part time technicians who are working on the side. Ask the person what their qualifications are and their employment history. Are they currently employed in a profession totally outside of the technology field? If so, you should consider this a red flag! We typically charge $140 to completely back up your existing data, re-install Windows, restore your data which ends up making your PC run as good as when it was new. We firmly believe we are worth every penny we charge and that our price is fair to our customers. Make sure you select a vendor who feels the same way!

Keeping Your Computer Up To Speed With Registry Repairs

There was a time we didn’t think too much about registry cleaners, or register repair software. Back in the days of Windows 95/98, our biggest enemies were computer viruses. Even though computer viruses are probably our biggest enemy still today, a corrupt registry can cause many computer problems!

With today’s operating systems being so enormous compared to the old Windows 95/98 size, a corrupt registry gets in the way of our computing more than it used to. Though there are new viruses that come out every day, our technology seems to be able to keep up with them better than in years past. Also, computer operators are better educated as to how to keep a virus from being executed on their computer.

So, what harm can registry corruption cause, what causes registry corruption and most of all what can we do about it? In this article, we’re going to discuss these things and see if we can make some sense of them.
Stuff That Gets Added
Any time we add a program or any type of software to a computer, entries are put in the registry. These entries are used to direct the operating system and aid it in carrying out its commands. However, when the program or software is removed or upgraded these entries become false pointers that harm the operating system’s efficiency. These types of entries are known as registry corruption.
Temporary computer files are added to our registries by the boatload when we surf the Internet. Unfortunately, these files are left in the registry when we are through surfing and then they become registry corruption because they give the operating system directions to nowhere.
All kinds of malware, such as viruses and spyware, are different types of software that puts entries in the computer registry so they can perform their terrible deeds. Still, after your virus/spyware cleaner gets rid of the spyware and viruses, the registry corruption remains behind to perform terrible deeds of its own!
Though it may not seem like a serious problem at first, registry corruption can do serious harm to your computer operations and eventually your operating system. Corruption will jam up ordinary operations because the operating system will have to deal with thousands of entries telling the operation system to go to places that don’t exist. This will make your computer very slow and become prone to errors and crashes.
What To Do About Registry Corruption
What all this means is, in today’s world we have many more programs placing entries in the registry than ever before. Probably there are thousands of times more entries being placed in the registry than there were 10 years ago. Add to this fact that the newer Windows operating systems, namely Windows Vista and XP are way larger than the early Windows operating systems and you can see how registry corruption has become a real issue!
Getting rid of registry corruption is as easy as having a good registry cleaner installed on your computer. To remain free of corruption, you should run the registry cleaner once a week or so and after your virus and or spyware cleaner has removed a virus or spyware. To run at peak efficiency, a computer must be free of spyware/viruses and registry corruption.
